Montenegro Aims for Full EU Membership by 2026, Says Prime Minister
Montenegro is firmly committed to its goal of becoming a full member of the European Union by 2026, according to Prime Minister Milojko Spajić. He emphasized the country’s expectation for fair treatment throughout the European integration process, which he describes as essential to achieving this objective. During a recent meeting with Marta Kos, the EU Commissioner for Enlargement, Spajić outlined the acceleration of reforms necessary to meet ambitious targets.
As Montenegro prepares for an upcoming Intergovernmental Conference in Brussels, scheduled for less than a month from now, Spajić highlighted the importance of closing several negotiation chapters. The Prime Minister expressed confidence in progressing towards the ultimate goal of EU membership. He stated, “2026 will be a year of significant decisions—Montenegro is ready for the EU.”
The country’s leadership is focused on expediting reforms and adhering to the EU’s criteria. Spajić’s comments reflect a sense of urgency and determination to advance Montenegro’s position within the EU framework.
In his social media remarks, he described the discussions with Commissioner Kos as “very constructive,” underlining the collaborative approach taken in the integration process. The Prime Minister’s commitment to reform and engagement with EU officials signals Montenegro’s dedication to fulfilling its obligations and aspirations.
Montenegro’s journey towards EU membership has been marked by ongoing reforms and negotiations since it gained independence in 2006. The nation has been recognized for its potential, yet challenges remain in areas such as governance, the rule of law, and economic development.
With the 2026 deadline on the horizon, the Montenegrin government is determined to demonstrate its readiness for full membership. Spajić’s statements reflect a broader ambition to not only meet EU standards but also to strengthen Montenegro’s position within the union.
As the nation approaches critical milestones, the outcome of the upcoming conference in Brussels will play a pivotal role in shaping Montenegro’s European future. The Prime Minister’s message is clear: Montenegro is poised to take significant steps towards EU integration in the coming years.
