Lochinver Primary School’s choir, known as Coisir Og Loch an Inbhir, made a notable impression at the 2000 Royal National Mod held in Dunoon. Under the direction of their head teacher and conductor, Kenny Mackenzie, the children showcased their talents, achieving significant placements in multiple competitions.

Taking place outside the iconic Queen’s Hall, with the town’s landmark Victorian pier visible in the background, the choir participated in two key events during the festival. They secured second place in the rural primaries’ competition and placed fourth in the under-13 unison singing competition. This achievement marked a memorable milestone, as it was the first time many of the children had performed at a National Mod.

The Royal National Mod is a prestigious celebration of Scottish Gaelic culture, attracting participants from across the country. It serves as a platform for young talent, fostering a love for Gaelic music and language among children and communities. For the Lochinver students, the experience was not only about competition but also about cultural pride and community engagement.

Reflecting on the event, Kenny Mackenzie expressed pride in his students’ performances. He noted that the dedication and enthusiasm of the choir members were evident throughout the competition. Their success at the National Mod has encouraged a continued interest in Gaelic music within the school and the local community.

The achievements of the Lochinver Primary School choir at the 2000 Royal National Mod highlight the importance of nurturing young talent in cultural activities. As the children look back on this experience, it serves as a reminder of the rich traditions that continue to thrive in Scotland today.
