Concerns surrounding potential corruption in Podgorica resurfaced as Milan Knežević, the president of the Democratic People’s Party (DNP), questioned the integrity of current mayoral candidate Saša Mujović. Knežević’s remarks followed a history of corruption scandals involving three former mayors of Podgorica, raising the pressing question: will Mujović follow the same path?

In a video message shared on social media, Knežević referenced the political careers of Miomir Mugoša, Slavoljub Migo Stijepović, and Ivan Vuković, all of whom were associated with the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS). He accused them of engaging in corrupt practices, including accepting bribes and fostering secret contracts. Knežević stated, “These three mayors had the same political agenda: corruption, bribery, and clandestine deals.”

The DNP president specifically criticized plans for a waste collection facility in Botun, a location he claims has been plagued by environmental issues for decades. He asserted that the previous administrations aimed to turn Botun into a waste dump, thereby poisoning the residents of Zeta and leading them to a “political dump” instead.

Knežević’s comments reflect a growing frustration with the legacy of corruption that has marked governance in Podgorica. He concluded his message with a direct challenge to Mujović, asking, “Will he repeat the same mistakes?” and emphasized his stance against the proposed waste facility with a succinct declaration: “No to the collector.”

The political landscape in Montenegro continues to evolve amid these allegations, as citizens remain vigilant regarding the actions and decisions of their leaders. As the election approaches, the accountability of candidates like Mujović will be under scrutiny, and the electorate will be watching closely to see if they choose a path of transparency over the shadow of corruption that has tarnished the city’s leadership.
