Duolingo Apologizes for “Mean” JK Rowling Question in German Course

Duolingo has issued an apology after a question in its German language course described author JK Rowling as “mean.” The language learning platform faced backlash from users following a complaint about the content of a chat question that included a prompt related to the author of the Harry Potter series.
The controversial chat question asked, “Magst du die Bücher mit Harry Potter als Figur?” which translates to, “Do you like books with Harry Potter as a character?” The correct answer suggested, “Yes, but in my opinion, the author is mean.” This prompted a user to voice her concerns on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, questioning the appropriateness of the content.
In response to the criticism, a Duolingo spokesperson stated, “We apologise for any offence caused and will remove this content from the app.”
Course Structure and User Engagement
Duolingo’s courses are designed to guide users through various units that combine quizzes and interactive content. As learners progress, the complexity of the questions increases. For instance, a section in the French course engages users in discussions about democratic principles, prompting them to express opinions on potentially contentious issues.
While the prompt about Rowling did not directly address her views on transgender issues, it reflects the ongoing cultural debates surrounding her statements. Rowling has been a polarizing figure since she publicly supported Maya Forstater, a campaigner known for her gender-critical stance, in 2019.
JK Rowling’s Controversial Statements
The 60-year-old author has consistently voiced her beliefs on transgender rights, sparking significant public discourse. In April 2023, during an online exchange with singer Boy George, Rowling misrepresented statistics regarding sexual assault arrests in the UK, claiming they implied a risk posed by trans women. This assertion has been widely criticized and fact-checked, with the original data from the Coventry Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre not addressing the involvement of transgender individuals at all.
Rowling has also established initiatives such as the JK Rowling Women’s Fund, aimed at supporting legal cases that align with her views. Her net worth is estimated to be over £820 million (approximately $1.1 billion), enabling her to finance her causes independently. Additionally, in 2022, she founded the sexual violence and rape crisis centre, Beira’s Place, in Edinburgh, which excludes transgender women from its facilities.
As the conversation continues, the impact of Duolingo’s course content reflects broader societal discussions on gender and identity. The company’s swift response to user feedback highlights its commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment, albeit while navigating the complexities of cultural sensitivities.
PinkNews has reached out to Duolingo for further comment on the situation.
