Dog Owners Advised to Rethink Walks as UK Faces 34°C Heatwave

Pet owners across the UK are being urged to reconsider walking their dogs as temperatures are expected to soar to 34°C in August. This summer has already seen three significant heatwaves, and the forecast suggests that another may soon impact the region. With weather maps showing dangerously high temperatures, experts warn that extreme heat can pose serious health risks to dogs, making alternative methods for exercise a necessity.
Veterinary professionals, including insights from the Kennel Club, indicate that temperatures exceeding 27°C are too high for safe dog walks. Instead, they recommend keeping pets engaged indoors when conditions are hazardous. Dog owners should be particularly cautious as temperatures approach this threshold, with 20°C to 23°C considered a time to begin taking precautions, such as choosing shaded areas for walks. Anything above 24°C is deemed “risky,” and trips outside should be limited to essential outings only.
In light of these warnings, Danny Nelis-Rouse, owner of the motivational toy company Tug-E-Nuff, has shared creative tips for keeping dogs active and entertained at home. He emphasizes that mental stimulation can be just as beneficial as physical exercise. According to Nelis-Rouse, “just 20 minutes of sniffing is as enriching for dogs as a one-hour walk.” Therefore, engaging dogs in games that involve their sense of smell can be highly effective.
One recommended activity is to hide treats around the house, encouraging dogs to sniff them out. Nelis-Rouse suggests a simple yet engaging game: “Scrunch up pieces of paper and hide treats inside for our dogs to find. You can also fill a box with scrunched-up paper and other noisy household materials and hide treats in a dispensing dog toy.” These activities can keep dogs occupied and mentally stimulated, which is crucial during extreme heat.
Certain breeds, such as French Bulldogs and Pugs, are particularly vulnerable to overheating due to their physical characteristics. Overweight dogs, older pets, and puppies are also at increased risk in hot weather. Owners should monitor their pets closely, as some dogs may struggle with higher temperatures even below 27°C.
As the UK braces for another heatwave, it is essential for dog owners to prioritize their pets’ well-being. By opting for indoor activities and keeping walks to a minimum during peak heat, owners can help ensure their furry companions remain safe and healthy throughout the summer months.
