Daredevils Raise Record £82,518 at Myton Hospice Abseil

A group of 118 daring individuals took to the heights of Coventry Cathedral on September 27, 2023, to participate in the annual sponsored abseil for Myton Hospices. Their courageous efforts culminated in a remarkable fundraising achievement, raising a record £82,518 to support local individuals facing life-limiting illnesses.
Participants bravely navigated the descent of Coventry’s iconic landmark, contributing to the charity’s mission of providing essential care. Sponsorship efforts are still ongoing, indicating a strong community commitment to the cause.
Natalie Walker, Events and Campaigns Manager at Myton Hospices, expressed heartfelt gratitude to all those who participated. “We are incredibly grateful to each and every person who joined us on Saturday and braved their fears and stepped out of their comfort zone – quite literally – to raise vital funds for Myton,” she commented. “Your support means more people can access the expert, compassionate care they need and deserve. We cannot thank you enough.”
Among the participants were several lecturers from Coventry University, including Donna Royle, Laura O’Brien, and Jess Waldron. This team of Nursing Associates raised a total of £3,270, motivated by both personal and professional experiences with end-of-life care. Their connection to Myton Hospices runs deep, as two members have worked there, witnessing the impact of its services firsthand.
Reflecting on her experience, Laura O’Brien noted, “Myton has meant a lot to me for years. My daughters and I began fundraising around eight years ago after losing a close relative, often joining fun runs in Coventry and Warwickshire in neon wigs.” O’Brien’s connection to Myton became even more personal when her grandmother, Penny McClafferty, passed away peacefully at the hospice, surrounded by family. “The care was outstanding, and I’ll always be grateful for that final moment together,” she added.
Karen Heywood, Course Director for Nursing Associates Apprentices at the university, emphasized the significance of the event. “Each of us has been touched by Myton’s work. As nurses, nursing associates, and midwives, we understand the importance of quality end-of-life care,” she stated. “It’s especially important to support Myton now, as we honour the compassion and care they offer during life’s most difficult moments.”
Other participants, including Chloe Hollingsworth, Course Director for Fashion, Brand and Communication, expressed their hopes that their fundraising efforts would alleviate some hardships for those in need. “I hope my fundraising helps make someone’s life more comfortable and encourages others to support this amazing cause,” she remarked.
The Myton Hospices extended appreciation to event partners Eight Point Two, who ensured the safety and smooth running of the day, as well as MFS Solutions for their support with event setup. A spokesperson for the charity acknowledged the crucial role of volunteers and performers in maintaining high energy throughout the event. The charity also expressed gratitude for the support shown by the Lord Mayor of Coventry.
Community-driven events like the Coventry Cathedral Abseil play a vital role in facilitating the ongoing work of The Myton Hospices. The organization is actively working to raise £12.7 million annually, with only 17 percent of funding sourced from the NHS. This year, it will cost £15.3 million to continue providing free services at its hospices located in Coventry, Rugby, and Warwick, supporting patients and their families across the region.
