Clare Balding Supports Old Library Campaign in Newbury Today
Clare Balding, the acclaimed broadcaster and author, is visiting Newbury today, March 5, 2024, to advocate for the Corn Exchange Old Library Campaign. The initiative aims to refurbish and reopen one of the town’s historic buildings as a vibrant arts hub. This event is set to take place at 14:00 in The Corn Exchange, where attendees will have the opportunity to engage with Balding during a discussion titled “An Audience with Clare Balding.”
During the session, Balding will delve into her debut novel for adults, Pastures New. The novel tells the story of Alex, a woman who has deftly evaded responsibility for nearly forty years. Her life takes an unexpected turn when she discovers she has inherited a dilapidated sheep farm in Wales, prompting her to confront her past and the truth about her unexpected legacy. The event will also spotlight Balding’s personal connection to the local area, enhancing the community’s engagement with her work.
Balding, known for her extensive career in sports broadcasting and coverage of major royal events, is also a best-selling author. She has penned numerous books, including children’s novels. Her autobiography, My Animals and Other Family, received the National Book Award for Autobiography of the Year. A passionate advocate for women’s sports, she was awarded a CBE for her contributions to sport and charity in 2022, an honor she received at Buckingham Palace.
Attendees can purchase copies of Pastures New from the Hungerford Bookshop, which will be present at the event. Tickets for this engaging afternoon are priced at £20, with all proceeds directed towards the Old Library Campaign.
Balding’s deep-rooted connection to the countryside, where she grew up surrounded by horses and dogs, has significantly influenced her storytelling. Her love for literature spans from authors like Jilly Cooper to Henry James. As an amateur flat jockey, she won the title of Champion Lady Rider in 1990, showcasing her multifaceted talents.
In addition to her literary pursuits, Balding hosts the beloved Ramblings series on Radio 4, where she explores the diverse landscapes and rich narratives of the British Isles. Her work not only entertains but also highlights the importance of storytelling within communities.
The Old Library Campaign represents a significant effort to restore an essential cultural landmark in Newbury, and Balding’s involvement amplifies its visibility and impact. As the community rallies to support this initiative, events like today’s reinforce the importance of preserving local heritage while fostering new cultural developments.
