Appledore Ranks Third in Top Places to Live in Devon

The village of Appledore, located in North Devon, has recently been recognized as one of the best places to live in the region, securing the third spot in the Muddy Stilettos list of the Top 300 Best Places to Live. Known for its rich history and picturesque surroundings, Appledore continues to attract residents and tourists alike, contributing to its vibrant community atmosphere.
Nestled by the estuary approximately six miles west of Barnstaple, Appledore is characterized by its narrow lanes and colorful cottages, particularly along Irsha Street. Visitors are often captivated by the village’s charm, which remains evident even under overcast skies. The cottages, painted in a spectrum of vibrant hues, create a stunning visual appeal that draws tourists year-round.
Local residents express a strong affection for their village. Keira Bissett, a four-year resident, appreciates Appledore’s tourist appeal while emphasizing its serene environment. “The pubs have live bands and it’s always just lovely. There’s plenty of areas to visit and it’s a great place to take photos,” she stated, adding that she wouldn’t choose anywhere else to live.
Rich History and Community Spirit
The village boasts a notable seafaring heritage, with its harbour dating back to the Viking era. Historically significant, Appledore played an essential role in shipbuilding and fishing, with the local Harland and Wolff dockyard constructing components for major naval vessels, including the Queen Elizabeth Class aircraft carriers. Margaret Smith, a local art shop employee, cherishes this historical backdrop. “I’ve been living in Devon for 38 years. I love the quirkiness and quaintness of Appledore,” she remarked.
Despite its many charms, residents voice concerns about certain local issues, particularly regarding parking and pedestrian safety. The absence of a dedicated zebra crossing has raised alarms, with locals noting that navigating between parked vehicles can be hazardous. “They could really use a pedestrian crossing, because people park along the road when you’re trying to walk through,” said Becky Frisby.
Appledore’s appeal extends beyond its residents; it has become a popular destination for tourists. Recently, the village hosted the Appledore Book Festival, featuring prominent personalities such as Alexander Armstrong, Martin Clunes, and Michael Morpurgo. Visitors like Chris and Barbara Bridle enjoyed their first trip to Devon, with Barbara commenting, “I’ve never been to Devon in my life, the weather could be better but we’ve had a great day in Appledore.”
A Community of Vibrancy and Welcome
The village’s stunning views over the Torridge Estuary and its seasonal ferry service connecting to Instow further enhance its allure. Local potter Heidi Knight highlights the village’s welcoming atmosphere, stating, “There’s a nice variety of shops for locals and visitors alike. It’s a special place and the people here make it a community.”
Appledore continues to thrive, balancing its historical roots with modern developments. As Heidi Knight noted, the village has successfully maintained its heritage while adapting to contemporary needs. “It’s a place like many others that’s struggling to survive but actually it’s a village of great success,” she concluded, underscoring the strong community spirit that defines Appledore.
With its breathtaking scenery, rich history, and vibrant community, Appledore has rightly earned its place among the top destinations in Devon, promising both residents and visitors an exceptional experience.
