Teenagers Turn to AI Chatbots for Mental Health Support
A significant shift in mental health support for young people is occurring, as approximately one in four teenagers aged 13 to 17 in England and Wales are now turning to AI chatbots for assistance. According to research conducted by the Youth Endowment Fund, this trend has emerged against a backdrop of rising youth violence, with many young individuals seeking help in response to traumatic events.
Shan, an 18-year-old from Tottenham, is one of these teenagers. Following the tragic deaths of two friends due to violence, she reached out to ChatGPT for support after finding traditional mental health services inadequate. “Chat feels safer, less intimidating, and more available,” she explained, highlighting the accessibility of AI chatbots compared to conventional therapy. The research indicates that around 40% of teenagers affected by youth violence are using AI for mental health support, with both victims and perpetrators significantly more likely to seek help through chatbots than their peers.
AI Chatbots Filling Gaps in Mental Health Services
The findings reveal that teenagers are increasingly turning to online platforms for support, especially when faced with long wait times for traditional mental health treatment. Many young users perceive AI chatbots as offering immediate responses to their concerns. Shan articulated this sentiment, noting that the AI is “accessible 24/7” and maintains confidentiality, unlike some school therapists who might share information with parents or authorities.
The study also found that black children are twice as likely to use AI chatbots for mental health support compared to their white counterparts. This disparity raises concerns about the accessibility and effectiveness of traditional mental health services across different demographics.
Jon Yates, chief executive of the Youth Endowment Fund, emphasized the urgent need for improved mental health support for young people. “Too many young people are struggling with their mental health and can’t get the support they need,” he stated. Yates noted that while it is not surprising that some are turning to technology for help, the focus must remain on providing adequate human support.
Concerns Over AI’s Role in Mental Health
Despite the perceived benefits of AI chatbots, there are growing concerns regarding their long-term impact on mental health. Critics warn that while chatbots may offer immediate responses, they lack the nuanced understanding and empathy that human professionals can provide.
The case of Adam Raine, a Californian teenager who tragically took his life after engaging with a chatbot, has brought significant scrutiny to companies like OpenAI. Following the incident, OpenAI denied that its chatbot was responsible, asserting that it is actively improving its technology to better recognize signs of distress and guide users toward real-world support.
Hanna Jones, a researcher focused on youth violence and mental health in London, expressed concerns about the current lack of regulation surrounding AI mental health support. “What we need now is to increase regulations that are evidence-backed but also youth-led,” she stated. Jones advocates for involving young people in the decision-making process to ensure that the tools available truly meet their needs.
As the landscape of mental health support continues to evolve, it is clear that while AI chatbots are providing an alternative for many young people, the necessity for human interaction and support remains paramount.
