The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has issued a public health advisory amid a newly confirmed outbreak of Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). As of September 4, 2025, the DRC Ministry of Health reported 28 suspected cases and 15 fatalities, including four health workers, in the Kasai Province. Testing conducted in Kinshasa confirmed the presence of the Ebola Zaire strain.

In response to these developments, the NCDC reassured the public that no cases of EVD have been recorded in Nigeria. The agency has enhanced surveillance measures at borders and points of entry to prevent any potential spread. Hospitals across the country are also being fortified to improve infection prevention and control protocols.

Public Health Measures and Recommendations

The NCDC emphasized the importance of early recognition, isolation of patients, and supportive treatment, stating that these actions significantly reduce the risk of death associated with the virus. Nigerians are advised to maintain strict hygiene practices, avoid contact with individuals exhibiting symptoms such as fever, diarrhea, or unexplained bleeding, and refrain from consuming bushmeat.

Health workers are urged to remain vigilant, adhering to prevention protocols and promptly reporting any suspected cases. The NCDC highlighted the availability of the approved Ebola Zaire vaccine, Ervebo, and noted that response teams backed by the World Health Organization (WHO) have been deployed in the DRC to assist with the outbreak.

Travellers arriving from affected areas are encouraged to self-report if they develop symptoms within 21 days of their arrival in Nigeria. They can do so by calling the NCDC’s toll-free line at 6232.

Ongoing Health Challenges in Nigeria

Nigeria continues to face multiple health challenges, including outbreaks of Lassa fever, meningitis, diphtheria, measles, and anthrax. The NCDC’s proactive measures in response to the EVD situation highlight the agency’s commitment to safeguarding public health and preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

As the situation evolves, the NCDC will continue to monitor developments closely and provide updates to ensure the safety and well-being of the Nigerian population.
