Mothers’ Mental Health Declines: Urgent Calls for Support

A recent report published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) highlights a troubling trend in maternal mental health. The study surveyed nearly 200,000 mothers of children aged 0-17, revealing a significant decline in those reporting “excellent” mental health—from 38.4% in 2016 to 25.8% in 2023. Conversely, the percentage of mothers indicating “fair or poor” mental health increased from 5.5% to 8.5% during the same period. This alarming decline calls for immediate attention and further investigation into the underlying causes.
Experts in mental health have begun to examine the complex pressures mothers face today. According to Robyn Koslowitz, a clinical child psychologist, parenting often leads to burnout due to its demanding nature. She noted that mothers must maintain round-the-clock emotional availability while frequently battling sleep deprivation and financial strain. The lack of affordable childcare and inadequate mental health resources further complicates their situation, creating an unsustainable environment.
Additionally, Anne Welsh, a clinical psychologist, emphasizes that societal expectations placed on mothers contribute significantly to their stress. She points out that today’s mothers are expected to excel in various roles—emotionally, professionally, and socially—while also being politically engaged. This idealized standard of “good motherhood” is not only exhaustive but also exclusionary, leading many to question the cost of these expectations.
More than a balancing act, motherhood today involves navigating a myriad of challenges that exacerbate feelings of isolation and overwhelm. Ariadna Forray, an associate professor of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, reveals that modern mothers face pressures that extend beyond traditional work-life balance. They are now tasked with ensuring their children’s mental health, managing the influence of social media, and dealing with unrealistic representations of parenting online.
The rise of digital platforms has introduced additional stress, as mothers often compare themselves to curated and idealized portrayals of motherhood. Forray explains that even though many mothers are aware that social media content is often staged, the pressure to conform can still lead to feelings of guilt and inadequacy. This phenomenon is compounded by the increasing popularity of “gentle parenting” content, which can impose unrealistic expectations on mothers, making them feel guilty for normal parenting frustrations.
Financial stress is another critical factor affecting maternal mental health. Childcare costs have skyrocketed, creating a situation where many mothers must make difficult choices. Welsh notes that mothers often find themselves in a position where they must choose between paying exorbitant childcare fees or stepping back from their careers, risking long-term professional repercussions. This financial strain, coupled with inflation and economic uncertainty, intensifies the challenges facing mothers from various socioeconomic backgrounds.
The concept of the “mental load” is crucial to understanding the exhaustion many mothers experience. Koslowitz describes it as not just a mental burden but a comprehensive emotional and physical strain that encompasses managing household logistics, emotional health, and societal expectations. Recognizing this invisible workload is essential for alleviating stress and improving overall well-being.
Experts identify several common symptoms of burnout among mothers, including chronic fatigue, feelings of inadequacy, and emotional detachment. Addressing these issues requires a multifaceted approach to support maternal mental health.
To protect their mental well-being, experts recommend several strategies. First, mothers should embrace a mindset shift from perfectionism to “healthy striving.” Welsh encourages mothers to prioritize self-care and recognize that being a “good enough” parent is sufficient. Koslowitz reinforces this notion, stating that what children truly need is a present parent who is willing to reconnect after challenges.
Micro breaks—short moments for self-reflection or personal activity—are also vital. Taking as little as ten minutes daily to focus on oneself can significantly enhance mental health. Building a support network is equally important, and Welsh advises mothers to engage in meaningful conversations with others who understand their struggles.
Establishing boundaries and sharing the mental load with partners can further help mitigate stress. Utilizing tools like the Fair Play system can assist in dividing responsibilities efficiently. Finally, seeking professional help when feelings of sadness, anxiety, or exhaustion interfere with daily life is crucial; both Koslowitz and Forray stress that therapy can be beneficial even outside of crises.
The findings from JAMA’s report serve as a wake-up call to society to reevaluate the expectations placed on mothers and to create supportive environments that acknowledge and address their unique challenges. The mental health of mothers is not just a personal issue but one that requires collective action and systemic change.
