Grandfather Overcomes Severe Nose Growth to Reclaim Life

A 68-year-old grandfather, Gerard McAliece, has successfully undergone surgery to correct a severe case of nose growth that left him unable to kiss his wife, Carol McAliece. The condition, known as Rhinophyma, resulted in significant swelling and deformity, affecting his daily interactions and self-esteem.

Gerard, from Kilmalcolm, Scotland, first noticed changes to his nose six years ago. Over time, it continued to grow, leading to a situation where the tissue was hanging down over his mouth and covering much of his face. He described the experience as distressing, particularly regarding how it impacted his relationship with his grandchildren. “I used to really worry at my grandchildren’s birthday parties – what do their wee pals think?” he said.

Despite feeling self-conscious and noticing the stares from others, Gerard initially hesitated to seek medical help. He had visited a locum doctor who dismissed his concerns after confirming he could still breathe. “I didn’t push it. I am not a pushy person and I don’t expect things to be done for me,” he explained, adding that he believed his condition would be deemed cosmetic.

Recognizing the toll the growth was taking on their lives, Carol decided to pursue private treatment. After researching successful cases of Rhinophyma at Ever Clinic in Glasgow, she reached out for assistance. Gerard was soon consulted by a specialist team led by Dr. Cormac Convery.

The outcome was life-changing. “The result has been fantastic. It has totally turned my life around,” he said. After the surgery, he found himself engaging with people again, enjoying meals out, and participating in activities he had long avoided.

Gerard emphasized the importance of taking action, encouraging others in similar situations not to delay seeking treatment. “If there is anyone out there in the position I was in, my advice to them would be – don’t wait. Just do it,” he advised.
