Fiona Phillips’ Husband Shares Heartbreaking Update on Her Health

Fiona Phillips, the former GMTV presenter diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer’s in 2022, is facing significant challenges as her health continues to decline. Her husband, Martin Frizell, recently provided a poignant update on her condition, sharing details of their life together and the impact of this devastating illness.
In a recent post on Instagram, Martin reflected on their memoir, Remember When, which achieved notable success by reaching fifth place on the Sunday Times Bestsellers List. The couple released the book last month, aiming to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and share Fiona’s story. Martin expressed the emotional toll the disease has taken on their family, revealing that Fiona no longer recognizes their eldest son, Nat, who is now 24 years old.
Accompanying his message was a nostalgic photograph of Fiona from before her diagnosis. Martin’s heartfelt words conveyed gratitude for the support they have received: “Fiona is on the bestsellers list for the fifth consecutive week. She made No 1. She wants to say a massive thank you to everyone who has shown interest in her story; it’s really lifted her mood.”
The response from followers highlighted the profound impact of Fiona’s journey. Comments poured in, with one supporter stating, “Beautiful photo, thank you for sharing,” while another added, “Devastating illness, sending love.” Many expressed admiration for Fiona’s strength and courage throughout this difficult period.
In a recent appearance on This Morning, Martin discussed the memoir and the challenges they currently face. He explained that Fiona is struggling with severe depression alongside her Alzheimer’s, which has prevented her from attending public events. “She’s got bad depression because she wants to work; she’s not well enough today to come and talk to you,” he told presenters Alison Hammond and Dermot O’Leary.
Martin’s determination to shed light on Alzheimer’s stems from his frustration with the lack of attention given to the disease, which is the leading cause of death in the UK. Initially intending to write a brief account of their experiences, he found himself compelled to produce a comprehensive narrative of 24,000 words. “It started off when we knew it was Alzheimer’s. It was to give her a purpose, to give her something to do,” he shared.
Fiona, once a vibrant and engaging presence, has been profoundly affected by the illness. “This is a bubbly, smart, fearless woman, very modern woman, and all of a sudden it stops,” Martin said, expressing his anger at the societal silence surrounding Alzheimer’s. He emphasized the importance of discussing the disease, stating, “We become invisible with Alzheimer’s; no one wants to talk about it.”
In his update, Martin also revealed that Fiona is experiencing anxiety and additional health issues that contribute to her confusion and discomfort. “She’s got a secondary problem that causes her to be in a lot of pain, which adds to the confusion,” he explained, highlighting the multifaceted challenges they face.
As Fiona and Martin navigate this difficult journey, their memoir serves as both a personal account and a call for greater awareness of Alzheimer’s. Their story resonates with many, reflecting the struggles and triumphs of those affected by this heartbreaking condition.
