Sandi Toksvig Responds to Susanna Reid’s Live Apology on ITV

Susanna Reid issued an on-air apology during an episode of Good Morning Britain after making a remark about Sandi Toksvig potentially “slowing down.” The former host of The Great British Bake Off quickly quelled any speculation about her retirement, insisting, “I’m still full of beans.” At 67 years old, Toksvig, known for her vibrant personality, emphasized that she has no immediate plans to step back from her diverse career.
The conversation unfolded on a Wednesday episode when Toksvig joined Reid and co-host Ed Balls to promote her new book, Friends of Dorothy. Reid’s comment about Toksvig possibly slowing down prompted her to clarify her stance. In a light-hearted exchange, Reid remarked, “You’re not showing any signs of slowing down, but why should you? I think we all know what that means and I apologise!” She added humorously, “I’m glad you’re not showing any signs at your grand old age.”
Toksvig responded with wit, saying, “Can I say that hadn’t occurred to me until that moment? Now suddenly I’m thinking, ‘Oh wait a second, maybe I should slow down!’” As the segment concluded, she reaffirmed her vitality, stating, “I’m still full of beans! If I desire to retire, you’ll be the first to know.” Reid playfully urged her not to retire just yet, before handing over to Toksvig for a brief weather presentation, fulfilling a long-held dream of hers.
Sandi Toksvig previously announced her departure from The Great British Bake Off in 2020, explaining that she wanted to focus on other professional commitments. “As my waistline will testify, Bake Off is an all-consuming show,” she remarked in her statement. This was not just a career change; Toksvig indicated that her time with the show was filled with cherished friendships, particularly with fellow judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood, as well as co-host Noel Fielding.
In an interview with Radio Times last year, she candidly revealed, “To be honest, I left Bake Off because I stopped having fun.” She described moments of boredom while waiting for meringues to dry, leading her to feel that her creativity was stagnating. Furthermore, Toksvig admitted she has not followed the newer seasons of the show, jokingly saying, “If somebody makes The Great British Cheese Off, I’m in.”
As Sandi Toksvig continues to engage with her audience through various platforms, including television and written works, her commitment to her craft remains evident. Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6 a.m. on ITV1, while The Great British Bake Off continues to delight viewers on Channel 4 every Tuesday at 8 p.m.
