Mae Martin Discusses Their Personal Journey in Netflix’s Wayward

Comedian Mae Martin has unveiled their latest project, the Netflix mini-series Wayward, which Martin describes as “very personal.” The series is set to premiere on September 25, 2024, and explores themes of youth, identity, and societal expectations through the lens of troubled teens at a fictional institution.
From Comedy to Drama
Martin, who transitioned into music earlier this year, has long considered Wayward a passion project. The series revolves around the fictional Tall Pines Academy, where troubled adolescents are sent for rehabilitation. Martin stars as Alex Dempsey, a police officer who relocates to the Tall Pines area with his pregnant wife, Laura, portrayed by Sarah Gadon. The couple encounters the enigmatic Evelyn, played by Toni Collette, who oversees the academy and exerts a mysterious influence over the community.
During a screening event in Los Angeles on September 20, Martin expressed the significance of the project. They revealed that the inspiration stemmed from a childhood friend who faced hardships in a similar institution. “I have been thinking about it since I was a teenager,” Martin shared. “My best friend when I was 16 was sent to a troubled teen institute. The stories she had about her time there were so crazy, so I’ve always been interested in that industry.”
Exploring Intergenerational Trauma
The narrative follows two best friends, Abbie and Leila, played by Sydney Topliffe and Alyvia Alyn Lind, as they navigate their relationships with family and friends. Martin emphasized the importance of understanding how societal labels can impact young people. They noted, “I feel strongly about how we pathologise young people when they might be just reacting to a sick world.”
As the series unfolds, it delves into themes of intergenerational trauma and the pressures placed on the younger generation. Martin stated, “As we get older, I feel like we have to suppress so much of our empathy, or critical thinking, just to participate in the world and the systems that govern the world.” They advocate for listening to young voices and harnessing the rebellious spirit often lost in adulthood.
The release of Wayward marks an important step in Martin’s career, showcasing their ability to blend personal narrative with broader societal issues. As they prepare for the premiere, Martin hopes the series will resonate with viewers and spark conversations about the treatment of young people in society.
Fans and newcomers alike can look forward to the premiere of Wayward on September 25, as Martin continues to push the boundaries of storytelling in their evolving career.
