Local Leader Criticizes €9.5 Million Lighting Project in Nikšić

In Nikšić, a public lighting project costing €9.5 million has drawn sharp criticism from local officials. Boris Muratović, the president of the Nikšić Municipal Committee of the Democratic Party of Socialists (DPS), released a video on September 29, 2025, that showcased the project’s shortcomings. The footage revealed significant issues with the new lighting, prompting Muratović to describe the situation as a “light show” gone awry due to malfunctioning fixtures.
Muratović emphasized the financial implications of the project, stating that the municipality had paid a staggering €882 for each lightbulb, a record he characterized as the worst investment in Nikšić’s history. His comments highlight concerns regarding the management of public funds in the city, suggesting that this expenditure represents a misuse of taxpayer money.
The installation of the new public lighting system has been met with disappointment from residents, many of whom expected improvements to their community’s infrastructure. Instead, the malfunctioning lights have created a chaotic scene in the city center, leading to frustration among citizens who feel let down by their local government.
Concerns Over Financial Management
Muratović’s criticism extends beyond the immediate problems with the lighting. He pointed out the apparent lack of accountability from the State Prosecutor’s Office (SDT) regarding the handling of public funds. He claimed that the SDT has remained silent on what he describes as a clear case of financial mismanagement that affects all citizens of Nikšić.
As the situation unfolds, the local government faces increasing scrutiny over its investment decisions and the perceived neglect of essential services. Muratović’s assertions have resonated with constituents, many of whom demand that their elected officials prioritize transparency and responsible spending.
The controversy surrounding the lighting project has sparked broader discussions about governance and accountability in Nikšić. Residents are calling for a reassessment of how public funds are allocated and managed, seeking assurances that future projects will deliver value for their money.
As the local authorities address these challenges, the community remains vigilant, urging their leaders to listen to their concerns and take corrective action to ensure that investments genuinely enhance the quality of life in Nikšić.
