Asmongold Critiques Twitch CEO Over Safety Concerns for TwitchCon

Concerns regarding safety at TwitchCon have escalated following the withdrawal of prominent streamers Valkyrae and QTCinderella from the upcoming event, scheduled for October 17-19, 2023, in San Diego, California. The two popular content creators cited fears for their safety, referencing a tragic incident in Japan where a creator was fatally stabbed. Their decision has triggered a larger dialogue about security measures at the convention.
In response to the criticism, Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, addressed the issue during a live stream, asserting that the platform prioritizes safety at its events. “We take security at TwitchCon extremely seriously,” Clancy stated. He emphasized that Twitch has dedicated teams focused on ensuring the safety of both creators and attendees. Clancy noted that individuals who have been indefinitely suspended from the platform due to service violations are prohibited from attending the event.
Despite Clancy’s assurances, Asmongold, a well-known Twitch streamer, raised serious doubts about the effectiveness of Twitch’s safety protocols. He pointed out past incidents, claiming that Twitch had not taken adequate action following the sexual assault of streamers nmplol and wake during last year’s event. Asmongold remarked, “If I was a woman, I would never go to TwitchCon,” highlighting his concerns over the platform’s ability to protect its attendees.
The situation escalated further when another streamer, DBR666, was escorted from the venue after violating TwitchCon’s code of conduct. This incident occurred after DBR666 allegedly behaved inappropriately towards nmplol, prompting Asmongold’s warning to potential attendees. He noted, “Last year, nmplol and wake were sexually assaulted by a streamer, and Twitch didn’t press charges or pursue any form of legal action against him.”
Asmongold’s comments resonate within the streaming community, where safety has become a pressing concern. The lack of accountability for previous incidents has left many questioning whether Twitch is equipped to ensure a safe environment for its attendees. Notably, Amouranth previously reported that security had to intervene due to stalkers following her during TwitchCon 2022.
This year’s TwitchCon promises to be a significant event for streamers and fans alike, yet the ongoing safety concerns may overshadow the excitement. With prominent figures like Valkyrae and QTCinderella choosing to withdraw, the implications for Twitch’s reputation and future events are profound. As discussions around safety continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how Twitch will address these critical issues and restore confidence among its community.
