Huawei Digital Power’s Energy Storage System Achieves Safety Milestone
Huawei Digital Power has achieved a significant milestone in energy storage safety with its Commercial and Industrial Hybrid Cooling Grid Forming Energy Storage System (C&I GFM ESS). The system successfully passed a rigorous extreme ignition test conducted by TÜV Rheinland at a national key fire safety laboratory. This assessment marks the first fire evaluation of an energy storage system (ESS) that adheres to the latest UL 9540A:2025 standard, establishing a new safety benchmark for the industry.
The extreme ignition test was designed to create the most challenging verification environment for energy storage systems. It assessed the safety performance of the C&I GFM ESS under severe ignition scenarios. A pack-level overcharge method triggered simultaneous thermal runaway in 60 battery cells, simulating a worst-case ignition scenario.
Under these extreme conditions, the C&I GFM ESS exhibited exceptional safety performance, supported by its innovative five-level protection design. When the fire temperature reached an alarming 961°C, the highest temperature recorded in an adjacent ESS remained at only 45.3°C. This temperature was significantly below the threshold required to activate the cell explosion-proof valve, demonstrating the system’s effectiveness in managing potential hazards.
Compliance with UL 9540A:2025 requirements was confirmed, as the C&I GFM ESS showed no fire propagation between units. The recorded peak heat release rate (HRR) during the test was 3 MW. Notably, total combustion lasted less than three hours before the system self-extinguished. Additionally, under open-door burning conditions, the system effectively managed heat release, showcasing its superior thermal management capabilities.
Huawei Digital Power’s achievement reflects its commitment to enhancing safety standards in the energy storage sector. As the demand for safe and reliable energy storage solutions continues to grow, this successful test reinforces the importance of stringent safety evaluations and innovative design in protecting both consumers and the environment.
This accomplishment not only highlights the technological advancements of Huawei Digital Power but also sets a new precedent in the energy storage industry, paving the way for future innovations that prioritize safety and efficiency.
