Massive Sinkhole Swallows Cars in Bangkok, Evacuations Underway

A significant sinkhole measuring approximately 50 metres (164 feet) deep opened in Bangkok, Thailand, following a road collapse early on March 15, 2024. The incident has led to chaos in the streets as vehicles were swallowed, prompting evacuations in the surrounding area. Local authorities anticipate that the situation could worsen due to heavy rain forecasted later in the day.
The collapse occurred near an underground train station currently under construction, according to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. Remarkably, there have been no reported casualties, although three vehicles were destroyed in the incident, causing major traffic disruptions throughout the city.
Videos shared on social media captured the moment the road gradually sank, causing several electricity poles to topple and damaging nearby water pipes. As the situation unfolded, people fled the area on foot, and motorists attempted to escape as the ground beneath them gave way.
Authorities Respond to the Emergency
Officials are closely monitoring the damage and are working to backfill the sinkhole. Governor Sittipunt stated, “We’re monitoring the damage and rushing to backfill the gap,” adding that “the situation has somewhat stabilised, though sliding may continue slightly.” Evacuations have taken place at a nearby police station and other buildings, with residents urged to remain vigilant as rain from the ongoing monsoon season could exacerbate the situation.
A local hospital announced it would suspend outpatient services for two days as a precaution. Although authorities confirmed that the hospital’s structure remains intact, evacuations were deemed necessary for safety reasons.
The sinkhole’s edge dangerously approached the police station, exposing its underground structure. Footage from the scene showed the moment when the four-lane road was completely severed, heightening concerns about the stability of the area.
Broader Context of Natural Disasters in Thailand
This incident occurs as parts of Asia prepare for the impact of Super Typhoon Ragasa, nicknamed the “king of storms.” Bangkok is still recovering from the aftermath of a devastating 8.2 magnitude earthquake that struck the region, causing extensive damage and loss of life. Following the initial quake, a secondary tremor of 6.2 magnitude compounded the destruction, with thousands feared trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings.
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that fatalities could range between 10,000 and potentially 100,000, as emergency officials work tirelessly to rescue survivors. The recent disasters have raised serious concerns about infrastructure resilience in a city that was the world’s most visited in 2024, attracting 32.4 million tourists according to Euromonitor International’s report on major city destinations.
As Bangkok grapples with the immediate effects of the sinkhole, residents are reminded of the ongoing need for preparedness and vigilance in the face of natural disasters.
