Former Apple Employee Questions Value of New iPhone Air

Apple Inc. launched its new iPhone 17 lineup on September 19, 2023, introducing a selection of innovative devices that include a redesigned Pro series with advanced camera capabilities and a sleek aluminium unibody design. Despite the excitement surrounding the new releases, a former employee has raised questions about the value of one particular model: the iPhone Air.
Tyler Morgan, who previously worked at Apple and now shares technology insights on social media, has taken to TikTok to express his reservations about the iPhone Air. He argues that there is “no reason” for consumers to invest in this model, suggesting that it primarily serves as an aesthetic choice rather than a functional upgrade. Morgan stated, “I am one of many people that wonder what is the point of the iPhone Air? It’s literally just the 17 with one less camera, a Pro chip, because they have to have a reason to charge you £999.”
Morgan criticized the iPhone Air for its perceived shortcomings, including a less powerful battery and a limited charging capability. He highlighted that while the iPhone Air offers a maximum of 20 watts for wireless charging, the base iPhone 17 model provides 25 watts. He further noted that the Air retains the same front camera as the iPhone 17 but lacks the additional features that come with the Pro models.
In contrast, Morgan recommends considering the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which is priced at £200 more than the Air. According to Apple’s comparison data, the Pro Max features a larger 6.9-inch display, a more substantial battery life of up to 37 hours of video playback, and an enhanced camera system that includes an Ultra Wide 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera. The Pro Max also offers double the storage capacity, with options up to 2TB compared to the 1TB available on the Air.
Apple promotes the iPhone Air as an “impossibly thin and light design” that is more durable than its predecessors. The company claims that it delivers remarkable all-day battery life, with 27 hours of video playback. Despite this, Morgan’s critique underscores a growing debate among consumers regarding whether the iPhone Air truly offers sufficient value for its price.
As Apple fans weigh their options, the allure of the iPhone Air’s sleek appearance continues to attract attention. However, as Morgan suggests, prospective buyers may want to consider their specific needs and whether the additional features of the iPhone 17 Pro Max justify the higher cost.
The complete iPhone 17 lineup, including the iPhone Air and Pro models, is now available for purchase. As consumers navigate through their choices, the discussion surrounding the new devices reflects a broader trend in the tech industry, where design and functionality often collide.
