Former Apple Employee Questions Value of New iPhone Air

Apple launched its highly anticipated iPhone 17 lineup on September 19, 2023, featuring several new models including the iPhone Air, touted as the company’s slimmest phone to date. While Apple aims to attract consumers with its innovative designs and features, a former Apple employee has raised concerns about the value of one particular model: the iPhone Air.
Tyler Morgan, who previously worked at Apple and now shares technology insights on social media, claims there is minimal reason for consumers to choose the iPhone Air over the standard iPhone 17. In a recent TikTok post, he stated, “I am one of many people that wonder what is the point of the iPhone Air? It’s literally just the 17 with one less camera, a Pro chip, because they have to have a reason to charge you £999.”
Morgan elaborated on his viewpoint, highlighting that the iPhone Air offers a weaker battery performance compared to the base model. He pointed out that it features the same front camera as the iPhone 17 but lacks the advanced capabilities of its siblings. He expressed disappointment over the device’s limitations, noting, “Worse wireless charging, only up to 20 watts, whereas the base model gets 25.”
Furthermore, he suggested that the iPhone Air primarily targets consumers looking to showcase their new device rather than those seeking functionality. “I don’t care who you are, what you say, there is no excuse for you to get an iPhone Air over the regular one,” Morgan asserted.
For those considering an investment in a new iPhone, Morgan recommended the iPhone 17 Pro Max, which retails for £200 more than the Air. According to Apple’s comparative data, the iPhone 17 Pro Max features a larger 6.9-inch display and a significantly enhanced battery life, offering up to 37 hours of video playback compared to the iPhone Air’s 27 hours.
In terms of photography, the iPhone 17 Pro Max includes two additional cameras, featuring an Ultra Wide 48MP Fusion Telephoto camera, enhancing its appeal for photography enthusiasts. For users requiring substantial storage, the Pro Max offers up to 2TB of space, double that of the iPhone Air’s 1TB capacity.
Despite Morgan’s critique, Apple has emphasized the iPhone Air’s sleek design and durability. The company claims that this model represents a significant advancement in lightweight technology, with innovative camera experiences.
The release of the iPhone 17 lineup has sparked discussions among Apple fans regarding the merits of each model. While some may be drawn to the high-end appearance of the iPhone Air, others may prioritize performance and features that the Pro models offer.
With the new devices now available for purchase, consumers face the challenge of determining which iPhone best meets their needs and expectations in an increasingly competitive smartphone market.
