Charithra Chandran Advocates for Change at ‘Together For Palestine’

The ‘Together For Palestine’ concert held on September 17, 2023, at Wembley Arena in London showcased a powerful display of solidarity for Palestinian causes, featuring performances and speeches from notable artists and celebrities. Among those taking the stage was actress Charithra Chandran, known for her roles in ‘Alex Rider’ and ‘Bridgerton’. She expressed the urgency of advocacy amid ongoing humanitarian crises, emphasizing the importance of using one’s platform for positive change.
Chandran addressed the audience with a poignant message: “There’s no choice. I have a platform. There are people that are dying, and I have to use my platform to speak out and advocate for those who need it.” Her remarks came as part of an event organized by Brian Eno, which featured performances from artists such as Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, and Yasiin Bey. The concert successfully raised just under £1.5 million for the Together For Palestine Fund, benefitting Palestinian-led organizations like Taawon, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund, and the Palestine Medical Relief Service.
Advocacy and Community Support
The event took place shortly after a United Nations commission inquiry concluded that Israel had committed acts of genocide in Gaza, a claim that Israel continues to deny. In light of these circumstances, Chandran encouraged fellow artists who may hesitate to express their support for Palestine: “You can always join us. There’s always time and it’s never too late. I understand fear and reservations, but your speaking out may save lives.”
Chandran acknowledged that while she has not faced significant backlash herself, she understands the challenges other artists may encounter. “What’s backlash when there are people dying?” she questioned, reinforcing her commitment to the cause. She noted the concert’s significance as a reflection of a tragic reality, stating, “It’s tragic that it’s reached a critical mass where what is happening can’t be denied, and that it is in fact a genocide and attempts at ethnic cleansing.”
Art as a Catalyst for Change
As she highlighted the role of art in driving political change, Chandran stated, “Art is able to influence people. It can inform, it can soothe and it can provide hope. Hope will save us, and we need to continue to be hopeful. No matter what. There has to be change and there will, but we just have to keep fighting.”
The concert gathered a diverse array of speakers and performers, including Richard Gere, Benedict Cumberbatch, Florence Pugh, and Nicola Coughlan, all advocating for urgent action on behalf of the Palestinian people. The collective effort at Wembley Arena served not only as a fundraising initiative but also as a significant statement of unity and resistance against ongoing injustices.
Chandran’s call to action resonates with many, showcasing the potential of celebrity influence in raising awareness and funds for critical humanitarian issues. As the event concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose and determination to continue fighting for change.
