Boxing Champion Ricky Hatton Found Dead at 46 in Hyde

Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton has been found deceased at the age of 46 at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester. According to the PA news agency, local police reported that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death. A spokesperson for the Greater Manchester Police stated that officers received a call from the public at 6:45 a.m. on [date], leading them to Bowlacre Road, where Hatton’s body was discovered.
Hatton, a two-weight world champion known for his engaging fighting style, captured titles at both light-welterweight and welterweight. His career, which spanned over a decade, saw him rise through the ranks to compete against some of the sport’s most formidable opponents, including Kostya Tszyu, Floyd Mayweather, and Manny Pacquiao. His approachable demeanor and openness about personal struggles with mental health earned him a devoted fan base around the globe.
Despite facing challenges after retiring from boxing, including a strained relationship with his family and a court case involving his former trainer Billy Graham, Hatton transitioned successfully into training. He coached Zhanat Zhakiyanov, who won the world bantamweight title in 2017 under Hatton’s guidance.
In July 2023, Hatton announced his intention to return to the boxing ring for a professional bout against Eisa Al Dah in December. This announcement generated excitement among fans, marking a potential comeback for the beloved fighter.
Hatton’s career was marked by significant victories, including a pivotal moment in June 2005 when he defeated Tszyu, leading to a retirement of the defending champion at the end of their IBF title fight in Hatton’s hometown arena. His American debut in 2006 showcased his talent further, as he secured a points victory over Luis Collazo in Boston. The following year, a win against Mexican icon José Luis Castillo in Las Vegas solidified Hatton’s status as one of boxing’s elite.
In late 2007, Hatton faced Floyd Mayweather in a highly anticipated match. Despite his valiant effort, he suffered his first professional defeat, yet his reputation remained largely intact. Subsequent bouts, including a challenging fight against Manny Pacquiao, ultimately led to Hatton’s retirement after a devastating second-round loss.
The boxing community mourns the loss of Ricky Hatton, a fighter whose legacy will endure through his contributions to the sport and the inspiration he provided to many.
