Aileen Sheehan has made history by becoming the first woman to win the prestigious FBD Young Farmer of the Year award. The announcement took place during the 27th annual ceremony held at the Killashee Hotel in Naas, Co Kildare, on March 15, 2024. This significant achievement highlights the evolving role of women in agriculture and the importance of their visibility in the sector.

Sheehan manages a dairy enterprise consisting of 140 dairy cows on a fully leased farm. Since beginning her farming journey in December 2021, she has successfully established a milk supply after leasing a dairy unit in Whitechurch and purchasing her own herd. In 2023, she introduced her own heifers and now operates the farm alongside her husband while also caring for their six-month-old baby. The couple employs three part-time staff members, emphasizing a strong commitment to sustainability within their farming practices.

At the awards ceremony, Sheehan addressed the audience, underscoring the need for women to take prominent roles in agriculture. She stated, “Behind every good man is a great woman, and that’s true, but we shouldn’t be behind. It’s time for women in the agriculture sector to step forward.” Her remarks resonated with many in attendance, illustrating the growing recognition of women’s contributions to the industry.

The FBD Young Farmer of the Year competition aims to celebrate and reward the top young farmers in Ireland. Contestants are evaluated based on several criteria, including business initiative, innovation, farm efficiency, safety, environmental awareness, and agricultural knowledge. The judges praised the high caliber of this year’s participants and commended all those who took part in the competition.

Josephine O’Neill, national president of Macra, remarked on the significance of Sheehan’s achievement, saying, “History is made as we announce the first female winner of the FBD Young Farmer of the Year awards. Throughout the competition, she has demonstrated her passion for and dedication to agriculture, the environment, and her local community.” Sheehan’s leadership is expected to inspire future generations of farmers, particularly young women.

Michael Berkery, chairman of the FBD Trust, expressed his congratulations, stating, “On behalf of the entire FBD team, I extend our congratulations to Aileen Sheehan on this well-deserved award. The FBD Young Farmer of the Year award is a reflection of Aileen’s unwavering dedication, passion, and hard work.” Berkery emphasized the importance of recognizing young farmers and their contributions to the agricultural community.

Francie Gorman, another supporter of the event, also congratulated the participants, encouraging them to continue their involvement in the farming sector. “Having dipped their toe in the water, I would ask this year’s entrants to consider extending their involvement in representing farmers,” he said.

The success of Aileen Sheehan as the first female recipient of the FBD Young Farmer of the Year award marks a pivotal moment in the agricultural landscape. Her journey serves as an inspiration, demonstrating that women are increasingly taking on leadership roles within the industry. As the farming community continues to evolve, Sheehan’s story will undoubtedly encourage more women to step forward and shape the future of agriculture.
