Terry Harper, a 62-year-old bus driver from London, was shocked to learn that the persistent back pain he attributed to lifting a mattress was actually caused by twelve tumours affecting his spine. The discovery came after he sought medical attention due to worsening symptoms that left him incapacitated. Despite undergoing treatment, Harper now lives with relentless pain as his cancer has returned.

Initially, in April 2022, Harper began experiencing severe back cramps. He assumed the discomfort stemmed from his previous work in demolition and the strain of moving heavy objects. After consulting his general practitioner, he was diagnosed with slipped discs and reassured that the pain would subside in six weeks. However, as the pain intensified, it significantly limited his mobility.

“I couldn’t eat, couldn’t go to the toilet, couldn’t get off the bed,” Harper recalled. After his partner called for an ambulance, he was initially deemed not serious enough for immediate care. Two days later, as his condition deteriorated, a second call prompted urgent medical assistance, leading to his hospitalization.

Upon further examination, doctors diagnosed him with stage-three cancer and identified the tumours through a CT scan. This revelation marked a devastating turning point in Harper’s life. “It’s like I’ve been hit by a bus,” he said, expressing disbelief at the diagnosis. He described the emotional impact of receiving such news as profoundly distressing, stating, “I wouldn’t wish it on anybody.”

Recurring Battle with Cancer

After undergoing chemotherapy, Harper’s cancer went into remission in December 2024. Unfortunately, by June 2025, he faced the harsh reality of its return. “I’ve been getting cramps throughout the night, and I’ve got a growth in my right eye that they’re investigating,” he explained. Currently, he is scheduled for 36 weeks of chemotherapy, followed by additional treatment over the next two years.

Myeloma, the type of blood cancer affecting Harper, is often difficult to diagnose as its symptoms can mimic general aging or minor ailments. While it is the third most common form of blood cancer, it remains incurable. However, treatment options can provide periods of remission. Symptoms of myeloma include persistent pain, fatigue, frequent infections, and unexplained weight loss, among others. According to Myeloma UK, recognizing these symptoms early can be critical for effective management.

Challenges Beyond Health

As Harper copes with the physical toll of his illness, financial strain adds another layer of difficulty. He is supposed to be resting during his treatment but continues to work reduced hours to support his family, which includes three children and grandchildren. “It’s becoming a really big struggle financially,” he admitted, noting that the ongoing costs associated with his illness are overwhelming. To assist with his medical expenses, a GoFundMe campaign has been established.

The experience has been life-altering for Harper, who describes himself as previously healthy and unaware of the challenges that serious illness could bring. “You hear it on the telly but never think you will get cancer in your lifetime,” he stated. Now, as he battles this disease, he encourages others to be vigilant about their health, urging them to seek medical advice if they experience any concerning symptoms.

The journey of Terry Harper illustrates the importance of timely medical intervention and the profound impact that serious health issues can have on individuals and their families. As he continues to fight against myeloma, Harper remains a symbol of resilience in the face of adversity.
