Portsmouth Falls to Norwich 2-1 Amid Injury Woes and Late Drama

Portsmouth FC faced a challenging start to the Championship season as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Norwich City at Fratton Park on August 17, 2025. The loss was compounded by a significant injury setback for key player Callum Lang, raising concerns for the Blues as they navigate the early weeks of the season.
The match began poorly for Portsmouth, as they conceded two goals within the first 14 minutes. Norwich’s Harry Darling opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading in from a free-kick taken by Ante Crnac. Just eight minutes later, they increased their lead when Josh Sargent found the net following a flick-on from a long throw, leaving Portsmouth’s defence scrambling.
Despite the early deficit, Portsmouth appeared to regain some momentum in the final stages of the match. The turning point came in the 80th minute when Colby Bishop was awarded a penalty after a foul on substitute Florian Bianchini. Unfortunately for the Blues, Bishop’s penalty was saved by Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic, marking the fourth miss in his last ten attempts.
As Portsmouth looked to rally, Adrian Segecic pulled one back in the 84th minute with a well-placed shot from the edge of the box, igniting hope among the home crowd. The Blues pressed for an equaliser and thought they had found it deep into stoppage time when Connor Ogilvie was brought down in the area. However, the referee deemed it a simulation, booking Ogilvie instead.
Injury Concerns Add to Portsmouth’s Challenges
The loss to Norwich not only stings due to the scoreline but also due to the injury woes plaguing Portsmouth. Callum Lang was forced to leave the pitch after experiencing discomfort in his left hamstring, marking another setback for a player who has struggled with injuries since February. This latest injury raises questions about his availability for the coming weeks, particularly with the transfer window closing in just 16 days.
Portsmouth’s right-wing situation is already precarious, with Harvey Blair sidelined until at least October and uncertainty surrounding Matt Ritchie’s future at the club. In light of these challenges, manager John Mousinho experimented by playing Lang out of position, a move that now seems ill-fated.
With just two matches into the Championship season, Portsmouth must urgently seek reinforcements for their right-wing position. The injury to Lang, alongside the existing issues, heightens the urgency for new signings as they approach the September 1 deadline.
Mixed Performance Leaves Portsmouth Reflecting
Despite the defeat, Portsmouth can take some solace in their late efforts to secure a point. The team showed resilience in the final ten minutes, pushing Norwich on the back foot and creating several opportunities. However, their inability to convert these chances, including the penalty miss, has raised concerns about their finishing.
The day was marked by a strange atmosphere at Fratton Park, as Portsmouth maintained possession for significant stretches yet struggled to create clear-cut scoring opportunities. The frustration was palpable among fans, who witnessed a team capable of more than what was displayed on the pitch.
While the defeat to Norwich is a bitter pill to swallow, it is the ongoing concerns surrounding player fitness and squad depth that will occupy Portsmouth’s thoughts as they prepare for the challenges ahead. The Blues must regroup quickly if they hope to remain competitive in the Championship.
