Next Acquires Seraphine After Administration, Aims to Revive Brand

The renowned maternity fashion label, Seraphine, has been acquired by retailer Next following the brand’s entry into administration earlier this month. Known for dressing high-profile figures such as Kate Middleton during her pregnancies, Seraphine faced significant challenges that led to its recent financial struggles. The acquisition price was set at £600,000, raising hopes for a revival of the iconic brand.
On July 1, 2023, Seraphine entered administration, resulting in the redundancy of 95 employees. This move raised concerns about the brand’s future, as well as the implications for its loyal customer base. The acquisition by Next is seen as a strategic effort to breathe new life into Seraphine, which has been celebrated for its stylish and functional attire aimed at expectant mothers.
Cecile Reinaud, the original founder of Seraphine, is set to return to the company as part of the rescue deal. She expressed optimism about the brand’s future, stating, “This new ownership feels like a good fit and I believe Seraphine will thrive again. I’m excited to be part of this new chapter.” Reinaud previously sold the business to private equity firm Mayfair for £50 million in December 2020. Reflecting on the brand’s decline, she described her feelings as “heartbroken” and criticized the previous owners for “wiping out in four years, the work of 20 years.”
Next has outlined plans to focus on the core strengths of Seraphine, emphasizing its commitment to providing chic and functional clothing for pregnant women. The retailer’s strategy includes leveraging its existing retail network to enhance the brand’s visibility and reach.
The acquisition is not only significant from a business perspective but also highlights Seraphine’s cultural impact. The brand gained worldwide recognition for its elegant maternity gowns, particularly when worn by high-profile figures such as Kate Middleton. Additionally, Princess Eugenie has also been seen sporting Seraphine products, further cementing the brand’s status in the fashion industry.
Interpath, which managed the administration process, expressed satisfaction with the outcome. Chris Pole, a representative from the firm, remarked, “We are pleased to have concluded this transaction which preserves the Seraphine brand and wish the team at Next all the very best for the future.”
As Next embarks on this journey to revive Seraphine, many will be watching closely to see how the brand adapts and evolves under new ownership. The hope is that the revival will not only restore the brand’s former glory but also provide employment opportunities for those affected by the recent redundancies.
