Co Down Man Shares HIV Journey, Urges Testing on World AIDS Day

A 61-year-old father and business consultant from County Down has publicly shared his HIV diagnosis for the first time, highlighting the importance of awareness and testing on World AIDS Day. Known only as Eddie, he was diagnosed with HIV 11 years ago after a new partner concealed their status from him. His story aims to combat the stigma surrounding the virus and encourage individuals of all backgrounds to get tested.

Eddie’s diagnosis occurred during a tumultuous period in his life; he was experiencing a marriage breakdown and had begun a new relationship. Upon revealing his HIV status to his partner, he later discovered they had been aware of their own HIV status and failed to disclose it. “My world fell apart. I was in what I felt to be a trusted relationship,” he said. “When I look back, it became obvious that they had known for some time.”

In 2012, Eddie’s health began to decline, prompting his general practitioner to order an HIV test. When he received the news of his positive diagnosis, the lack of information provided left him feeling isolated and confused. “The GP said I was HIV positive. There was no discussion about what HIV was, just that I needed to go to the GUM clinic,” he recalled.

Stigma and Support

Eddie described the stigma surrounding HIV in Northern Ireland as “the last taboo.” He has shared his diagnosis with only a few individuals, including three close friends, and has avoided healthcare services out of fear. “HIV can happen to anyone. Most people think it just affects gay men,” he emphasized. “I was married with children. We need to get the message out that anyone of any age or gender who is sexually active can get HIV.”

Statistics from the Northern Ireland Department of Health support Eddie’s concerns, showing that there were 101 new diagnoses of HIV in the region last year. Currently, there are approximately 1,439 people living with HIV. Alarmingly, a recent health survey indicated that nearly one in five people aged 16 to 34 are unaware of HIV, and fewer than one in three know that someone on effective medication cannot transmit the virus.

Eddie reached out to Positive Life, Northern Ireland’s only dedicated HIV charity, earlier this year. He credits the organization with providing him the support necessary to come to terms with his diagnosis. “Had it not been for Positive Life, I wouldn’t be here to tell my story,” he stated. “I have finally begun to come to terms with my diagnosis, through the amazing support and therapeutic counselling interventions they’ve provided for me.”

Call to Action

Jacquie Richardson, chief executive of Positive Life, echoed Eddie’s sentiments by emphasizing the importance of understanding one’s health status. “Our message is get tested, know your status and end HIV,” she said. The organization aims to dismantle the misconceptions surrounding HIV and promote a message of inclusivity and support.

Eddie’s journey serves as a poignant reminder that HIV can affect anyone, regardless of age or background. His advocacy for testing and awareness highlights the critical need for open conversations about sexual health and the resources available for those impacted by HIV. As World AIDS Day is recognized globally, Eddie hopes his story will inspire others to seek knowledge, support, and treatment.
