Investigation Reveals Putin Uses Duplicate Offices to Hide Location
A recent investigation by the research unit Systema has uncovered that Russian President Vladimir Putin employs identical replicas of his offices across various locations in Russia. This strategy aims to obscure his actual whereabouts and mitigate the risk of potential attacks. The report highlights that at least three identical workspaces exist in different residences: in Novo-Ogaryovo near Moscow, in Sochi on the Black Sea, and in the Valdai forest residence situated between Moscow and St. Petersburg.
Systema’s analysis involved examining around 700 video recordings and scrutinizing leaked travel logs of Putin’s entourage. The goal was to determine his true location during meetings that the Kremlin officially attributed to Novo-Ogaryovo. Findings indicate that many of these meetings occurred hundreds of kilometers away, primarily at the Valdai residence. This location has become increasingly favored by Putin since the onset of the war in Ukraine.
Identical Offices and Subtle Differences
Researchers meticulously compared the interiors of the allegedly identical spaces and identified a series of nearly imperceptible differences. These included variations in:
– The height of seams on wall coverings
– The position and height of door handles
– The shape and color of television stands
– The number of ventilation grilles on ceilings
– The placement of thermostats
In a propaganda segment aired on state television in 2020, a journalist entered one room and exited another, which, according to Systema’s findings, does not exist in the same city. The researchers distinguished the rooms based on subtle differences in door handle heights.
Systema asserts that most meetings the Kremlin has presented this year as occurring in Novo-Ogaryovo were actually filmed in Valdai, a residence surrounded by lakes, forests, and tightly secured access points. Furthermore, the report suggests that Alina Kabaeva, Putin’s partner, along with their children, often resides in Valdai, making it a more challenging target for Ukrainian drone strikes.
Satellite imagery from the summer of 2024 shows that at least 12 Pantsir-S1 air defense systems were deployed around Lake Valdai. In contrast, the entire metropolitan area of Moscow, home to over 20 million people, is covered by approximately 60 such systems.
Heightened Security Measures and the Impact on Putin’s Lifestyle
The Kremlin frequently releases older, pre-recorded materials to conceal the actual activities of the Russian president. State media personnel who film Putin are bound by strict confidentiality agreements, while security personnel maintain travel records that have assisted researchers in corroborating their findings.
Russian analyst Konstantin Gaze stated to RFE/RL that the logic behind these security measures is clear: “It would not seem appropriate to place Pantsir systems on the towers of the Kremlin… That is why Valdai has naturally become the main location.”
Putin’s heightened security measures follow a series of Ukrainian drone attacks, including incidents near the Kremlin and his Black Sea complex. Previous investigations by opposition media outlet Proekt claimed that Putin even demolished his summer residence, Bocharov Ruchey, out of fear of strikes.
Gaze compared Putin’s actions to those of former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, noting that “even his closest associates did not know where he was at any given time.” This approach stems from a fear not only of internal retribution but also of American Tomahawk missiles.
The revelations from Systema present a complex picture of the Russian leadership’s attempts to maintain security in an increasingly perilous environment, reflecting both the risks faced by Putin and the lengths to which he goes to protect his position.
