USMNT Implements Advanced Strategies to Combat Jet Lag
Traveling across time zones can significantly disrupt the body, leading to jet lag, which poses a challenge for athletes competing at high levels. The U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) faces this issue head-on, particularly as they prepare for friendlies against Paraguay and Uruguay this November 2023. With many players flying in from Europe, effective strategies for recovery are crucial to maintain peak performance.
Under the guidance of manager Mauricio Pochettino, the USMNT employs a comprehensive recovery plan that involves fitness coaches, physical therapists, dietitians, and technical staff. This holistic approach aims to ensure players are physically prepared, both before and after matches. According to first assistant coach Jesús Pérez, the team uses every available technology and expertise to optimize player recovery.
The recovery protocols identified by the team are categorized into four main areas: sleep quality, stress management, nutrition, and hydration, referred to as the “big rocks” of recovery by Jordan Webb, U.S. Soccer’s head of performance. These pillars have remained essential even as technology and scientific understanding of athlete recovery evolve.
With a commitment to transparency, the USMNT shares detailed data collected from recovery modalities and training loads with the players’ clubs. Webb noted that this strategy, which began during the last World Cup cycle, has been strengthened under Pochettino’s leadership. “We’ve doubled down on that strategy and continued to put the player at the center,” Webb stated.
Challenges in player recovery have gained attention this season, particularly with injuries sustained by players like Christian Pulisic and Malik Tillman during international commitments. Tensions have arisen between clubs and national teams over the handling of player fitness, with some club managers expressing concerns about how players are managed during national duties. Pochettino countered criticisms, asserting that the USMNT prioritizes player well-being and never forces athletes onto the field when they are injured.
The intake process upon arrival at camp involves comprehensive assessments, including blood and saliva tests to evaluate fatigue and hydration levels. This data is used to tailor individual training loads and recovery plans, ensuring players can perform optimally.
To mitigate jet lag, players are provided with “fly kits,” which include personalized sleep schedules and dietary supplements containing melatonin and vitamins. Defender Tim Ream emphasized the effectiveness of these kits, noting that they help shift the body’s circadian rhythm. “It would take them three, four, five days sometimes to get onto the new time zone,” he explained.
Technological aids such as Normatec boots are also utilized to enhance circulation and expedite muscle recovery. Upon arrival, players are encouraged to use eye masks and blue-light-blocking glasses to improve sleep quality. Adhering to optimal hydration and avoiding heavy meals before bed are additional strategies recommended by the staff.
As players adjust to new time zones, light exposure becomes a critical factor. Sebastiano Pochettino, U.S. fitness coach and son of the manager, explained that the timing of light exposure can help players acclimate more quickly. “What you want to do is delay those patterns,” he noted, stressing the importance of managing sleep cycles effectively.
Nutrition is also a vital component of recovery. Ream shared how dietary choices can significantly influence energy levels and overall performance. The USMNT provides multiple meals daily, but players often face the temptation to stray from the prepared menu. “You find on the Monday you’re like, wow, I feel like I had terrible, terrible food; low energy, irritable in a way,” he reflected.
Psychological aspects of recovery are not overlooked. Donnie Fuller, the team’s head athletic trainer, highlighted the benefits of informal conversations that occur during massage therapy, which can help players relax and mentally reset after long flights.
Despite the rigorous recovery protocols, player buy-in is crucial for success. Each athlete is encouraged to adopt at least one new habit per camp to enhance their recovery process. Mireia Porta, USMNT nutritionist, noted that competition for roster spots motivates players to adhere to recommendations from the performance staff. “They do [the tests] like a competition because they don’t want to be bad,” she said.
Ream, a veteran of the team, acknowledges the importance of recovery in extending his playing career. “It is definitely one of the factors in still being able to run around and play at 38 years old for sure,” he affirmed.
The USMNT’s multi-faceted approach to combating jet lag and enhancing overall player health illustrates their commitment to maximizing performance during crucial international fixtures. As the team prepares for their upcoming matches, the integration of science, technology, and individual player needs will remain at the forefront of their strategy.
