Former White House strategist Steve Bannon has made a bold claim that Donald Trump will return to the presidency for a “third term” in 2028. In an interview conducted in Washington, DC, Bannon argued that America “needs him to finish what we started.” His comments have raised questions about the implications of such a return, particularly in light of constitutional restrictions.

During the discussion with The Economist editor-in-chief Zanny Minton Beddoes and deputy editor Ed Carr, Bannon expressed confidence that Trump would overcome political obstacles and reclaim the White House. He disregarded the limitations imposed by the 22nd Amendment, which restricts U.S. presidents to two terms, stating, “He’s going to get a third term, so Trump 28. People just ought to get accommodated with that.”

Bannon, a key architect of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement, described Trump as a leader chosen by divine providence. He emphasized that Trump’s role transcends traditional political norms, asserting, “He’s a vehicle—he’s a vehicle of divine providence.” Bannon insisted that the country requires Trump’s leadership for “at least one more term” and remains unwavering in his belief that Trump will secure victory in 2028.

Zanny Minton Beddoes challenged Bannon’s assertions, questioning whether advocating for another Trump presidency would undermine the Constitution. She pointed out that finding a workaround to the 22nd Amendment could contradict its spirit. Bannon countered that a third term for Trump would be a reflection of the will of the American people. “If the American people, with the mechanisms we have, put Trump back in office, are the American people tearing up the Constitution?” he queried, asserting that this scenario would not violate constitutional principles.

Further defending Trump, Bannon dismissed the notion that a potential return would lead to authoritarianism. He stated, “Trump is nothing but a series of negotiations to keep this thing rolling forward.” He rejected claims of dictatorial intent, framing Trump’s approach as one of continual dialogue and compromise.

Despite being confronted with apparent inconsistencies in his arguments, particularly following his statement that the Constitution was “fit for purpose,” Bannon remained resolute about Trump’s significance to America’s future. He stated emphatically, “The only way President Trump wins in 2028 and continues to stay in office is by the will of the American people.”

In closing, Bannon reiterated his stance, saying, “We need to finish what we started.” His remarks encapsulate a fervent belief in Trump’s potential return to power, setting the stage for an intriguing political landscape as the 2028 election approaches.
