Nigeria Appoints Dr. John Nwabueze as First Tax Ombudsman
The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially appointed Dr. John Nwabueze as the country’s inaugural Tax Ombudsman, following the provisions outlined in the Joint Revenue Board of Nigeria (Establishment) Act, 2025. This significant appointment was announced on Tuesday evening by presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga, marking a pivotal step in the government’s efforts to reform tax administration.
President Bola Tinubu expressed his congratulations to Nwabueze and voiced strong confidence in his ability to fulfill the responsibilities of this new role with integrity and professionalism. Nwabueze hails from Oshimili South Local Government Area in Delta State and brings with him a wealth of experience from both public and private sectors.
Before his appointment, Dr. Nwabueze served as the Managing Partner of a well-regarded tax advisory firm. He has also held positions as Technical Adviser to the Joint Senate Committees on the Federal Capital Territory and Finance within the National Assembly. Additionally, he worked as a Technical Adviser to the Chief Economic Adviser under former President Olusegun Obasanjo. His vast experience positions him uniquely to lead the new office effectively.
Dr. Nwabueze holds a Doctor of Business Administration in Finance from Walden University in Minneapolis, USA. He also earned a Master of Science in Accounting from Strayer University in Washington, D.C., along with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Accounting and Mathematics from the University of Jos in Nigeria.
Enhancing Tax Administration and Accountability
The establishment of the Office of the Tax Ombudsman aims to bolster transparency and accountability within Nigeria’s tax system. The office seeks to enhance public confidence in tax administration and create a structured mechanism for resolving disputes between taxpayers and revenue authorities fairly and impartially.
This office will be tasked with receiving, reviewing, and resolving complaints related to taxes, levies, regulatory fees, customs duties, excise matters, and other associated issues, adhering to existing laws and regulations. Importantly, the Tax Ombudsman is mandated to manage disputes in an efficient and non-adversarial manner, ensuring that the rights of taxpayers are protected against any arbitrary or abusive actions by tax officials.
Nwabueze’s appointment is part of a broader strategy by the Nigerian government to implement comprehensive reforms in tax and revenue administration, aligning with President Tinubu’s vision for a more effective and transparent fiscal environment. The new office is expected to play a crucial role in promoting fair tax practices and supporting equitable economic growth across the nation.
The establishment of this position reflects a significant shift in Nigeria’s approach to tax governance, potentially paving the way for improved relations between taxpayers and government authorities. As the nation seeks to enhance its revenue streams and ensure compliance, the work of the Tax Ombudsman will be instrumental in shaping the future of tax administration in Nigeria.
