NHS Urges Action for Covid Symptoms Lasting Five Days
The NHS has issued a warning advising individuals to seek medical attention if they experience specific covid symptoms persisting for five days or longer. This recommendation is essential as prolonged symptoms may indicate a more serious case of the illness.
Current Covid Situation in the UK
Recent data from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) indicates a slight decrease in covid cases across the country, although the infection remains at “medium levels.” Hospital admissions for covid have also fallen slightly, with weekly positivity rates dropping from 13.1 percent to 12 percent. Notably, individuals aged 85 and above continue to face the highest risk for hospitalisation due to covid complications.
While most individuals recovering from covid find their symptoms resolve relatively quickly, the NHS emphasizes the importance of recognizing when to seek professional help. If symptoms persist or worsen, timely medical advice may be critical.
Guidelines for Seeking Medical Attention
The NHS advises that individuals should call 111 or request an “urgent” GP appointment if they or a child display symptoms lasting five days or more. This is particularly relevant for cases involving a high temperature—defined as 38C or higher—that does not subside with the use of paracetamol. Individuals may notice their chest or back feeling warmer than usual, and fever symptoms can include shivering, sweating, or flushed skin.
In addition, individuals are encouraged to reach out to 111 if they have concerns about their or their child’s symptoms, if symptoms are worsening, or if there are other signs of illness, such as:
- A rash
- Loss of appetite
- A feeling of weakness
- A child under three months with a temperature of 38C or higher
- A child aged three to six months with a temperature of 39C or higher
Covid symptoms may include:
- A new, continuous cough
- A loss or change to smell or taste
- Shortness of breath
- Fatigue
- Aching body
- Headache
- Sore throat
- Blocked or runny nose
- Loss of appetite
- Diarrhoea
- Nausea or vomiting
The NHS notes that these symptoms are similar to those of other illnesses, such as colds and flu. While many individuals recover within weeks, some may experience longer-lasting symptoms.
For those showing signs of covid, the NHS recommends staying at home and avoiding contact with others, especially if experiencing a high temperature or feeling unwell. Individuals can resume normal activities when they start to feel better and no longer have a high temperature. If a child exhibits mild symptoms, such as a runny nose or mild cough, and feels well enough, they may still attend school or childcare.
As the situation continues to evolve, the public is encouraged to stay informed and adhere to health guidelines to ensure their safety and the safety of others.
