Montenegro Honors Late Metropolitan Amfilohije with State Award

Montenegro’s President, Jakov Milatović, announced the posthumous awarding of the highest state order to Metropolitan Amfilohije on the fifth anniversary of his passing. This honor recognizes Amfilohije’s significant contributions to the spiritual and social fabric of Montenegro during his nearly three-decade tenure as the leader of the Montenegrin Orthodox Church.
Amfilohije, who was born in 1938 in Barama Radovića, was educated in theology and philology at institutions in Belgrade, Bern, Rome, and Athens. He became one of the most educated bishops within the Orthodox community. According to Milatović, Amfilohije’s influence extended beyond religious circles, contributing notably to Montenegro’s international reputation.
The President highlighted Amfilohije’s role during a critical historical moment—the 2006 referendum on Montenegro’s independence. His calls for unity and mutual respect were pivotal in ensuring a peaceful process, which helped preserve stability in the nation. Milatović noted that Amfilohije’s contributions to maintaining peace during that period were invaluable.
In the latter years of his life, Amfilohije became a symbol of spiritual resistance, particularly during 2019 and 2020, when he led peaceful protests against the Law on Freedom of Religion. These gatherings, known as liturgies, transcended their religious significance and evolved into a broader symbol of civil resistance, reflecting the collective voice of the people.
Milatović emphasized that the scale and persistence of these liturgies were crucial factors in the peaceful transition of power that followed decades of governance, paving the way for Montenegro’s aspirations for full European Union membership.
By posthumously bestowing the highest state decoration upon Amfilohije, Montenegro acknowledges his lasting contributions to the preservation of spiritual traditions, the fostering of social peace during sensitive periods in modern history, and his role in enhancing the international standing of the country. This recognition serves as a tribute to a leader whose impact on Montenegro remains deeply felt.
