Lewis Cope Addresses Dance Training Claims on Strictly Come Dancing

Lewis Cope, a contestant on the popular television show Strictly Come Dancing, has responded to allegations that he holds an unfair advantage in the competition due to his previous dance experience. Cope, a former actor known for his role in Emmerdale, is partnered with professional dancer Katya Jones.
The controversy erupted after fans discovered Cope’s history with dance, particularly his participation in the West End production of Billy Elliot at the age of 11. Additionally, his appearance on the show Got To Dance, where he reached the finals, raised eyebrows among viewers who felt he should not compete on the same level as those with little or no dance training.
In an interview with Metro, Cope expressed his confusion over the accusations. “I don’t really know where all that came from, to be honest,” he stated. “I trained as an actor, I danced a bit when I was a teen, but haven’t since.” He emphasized that his focus for a long time has been on acting rather than dance.
Cope dismissed the notion that he is a professional dancer, saying, “To call me professionally-trained or a professional dancer seems a bit bizarre, especially now that I’m working with these pros on the show.” He further remarked that suggesting he is on the same level as the dedicated professionals feels like an insult to their hard work and talent.
As the competition heats up, Cope’s comments came just before his performance on the latest episode, where he earned the highest score of the series so far, including the show’s first perfect score of 10. This achievement reflects not only his dedication but also the intense competition among all finalists.
Controversy surrounding contestants’ backgrounds is not uncommon on reality television, where viewers often debate the fairness of competitors’ prior experiences. Cope’s situation has sparked discussions about what constitutes an advantage in dance competitions and how prior experiences should be weighed against current performances.
As the season progresses, fans and critics alike will continue to watch Cope and his partner navigate the challenges of Strictly Come Dancing. With each performance, he aims to prove that hard work and passion can shine through, regardless of past experiences.
