Palestinian Ambassador Urges Global Action to End Gaza Crisis

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza has reached alarming levels, according to the Palestinian Ambassador to Montenegro, Rabii Alhantouli. He emphasizes that the ongoing conflict has resulted in catastrophic loss of life, with the death toll of Palestinian civilians potentially exceeding 68,122 since the onset of hostilities two years ago. Alhantouli states that approximately 90 percent of the Gaza Strip has been devastated by over 200,000 tons of bombs, leading to widespread destruction and suffering.
Most of the casualties are civilians, including at least 18,592 children and 12,400 women. More than 178,814 individuals have been injured, with many lacking access to essential medical care. Alhantouli describes the situation as a “planned massacre” perpetrated by Israeli forces, stating that no one has been spared. The toll includes the deaths of 252 journalists, 1,411 medical and humanitarian workers, and 800 education sector employees. He notes that 39 hospitals have been destroyed or rendered inoperable, and 95 percent of schools have suffered damage.
Alhantouli asserts that the Palestinian people are facing “one of the most barbaric aggressions in modern human history,” as Israel continues its campaign of violence. He claims this ongoing conflict is part of a broader strategy to eliminate the Palestinian identity. “The Israeli government accelerates the construction of colonial settlements in the West Bank while committing atrocities in Gaza,” he adds.
The ambassador criticizes the international community for its lack of effective intervention. He acknowledges the recent call from the Montenegro government for an immediate ceasefire and humanitarian aid delivery to Gaza, expressing gratitude for this stance. Nonetheless, he argues that words are insufficient in the face of such violence; concrete actions are necessary to halt what he describes as genocide against the Palestinian people.
In addressing the roots of the conflict, Alhantouli reflects on the attack by Hamas on Israel in October 2023, indicating that while he views the act as misguided, it has provided the Israeli government with justification to intensify its military actions. “The real beginning of this conflict dates back to 1948 when the state of Israel was established on Palestinian land,” he states. He argues that the ongoing military occupation has led to decades of oppression, violence, and instability in the region.
Looking ahead, Alhantouli expresses cautious optimism regarding negotiations scheduled in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt. However, he remains skeptical about the current Israeli government’s willingness to engage in meaningful dialogue. “The Netanyahu administration has continuously sabotaged efforts for a ceasefire,” he claims. He stresses that international pressure with specific measures against Israel is essential for any negotiations to succeed.
The United Nations has classified Israel’s actions in Gaza as genocidal. Alhantouli supports this assessment, stating that credible organizations, including the International Court of Justice and various human rights groups, have reached similar conclusions. He urges the international community to fulfill its obligations under international law, including the UN Charter and the Genocide Convention.
Alhantouli highlights that the international community has largely failed to protect Palestinian civilians over the past two years. He notes that some influential countries have shown bias in supporting Israel, which has hampered collective action against violations of human rights. “We will continue to call on every nation to respect its international obligations and to take action to stop the killings and protect the Palestinian people,” he asserts.
The ambassador also comments on the European Union’s response to the situation, acknowledging a recent shift in tone but criticizing the lack of concrete actions to address human rights violations. He observes that while the EU has acted swiftly in other contexts of human rights abuses, it has not taken similar measures against Israel.
Alhantouli emphasizes the importance of his embassy’s role in the region, including in Montenegro, in raising awareness about the realities faced by Palestinians. “Our embassies are not just institutions; they are bridges of solidarity between the people of Palestine and Montenegro,” he explains. Every message of support and initiative from this region carries significant weight for those suffering in Palestine.
As the situation in Gaza remains dire, the call for action grows louder. Alhantouli insists that the voice of Palestine must resonate around the world, stating that “spreading the truth is the first step towards justice and peace.”
