UK Pensioners to Receive Increased Winter Fuel Payments in 2025

Millions of state pensioners in the UK are set to benefit from an increase in the Winter Fuel Payment starting in 2025. Following a change in government policy, every pensioner will receive either £200 or £300, depending on their age, with those over 80 receiving an additional £100. This adjustment comes after the previous winter saw many pensioners lose their payments due to means-testing requirements.

In the past, the government announced that the Winter Fuel Payment, originally set at £300, would only be available to those who met specific means-testing criteria. This decision prompted significant public outcry, leading to a partial reversal by Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party. Under the new arrangement, all state pensioners will receive the payment, with only those earning above £35,000 annually required to repay it through tax to HMRC.

Winter Fuel Payments will again be automatically distributed to all state pensioners in 2025, but the amount varies based on the recipient’s age and specific circumstances during the qualifying week, which runs from September 15 to 21, 2025. Pensioners aged under 80, specifically those born on or before September 21, 1959, will receive a payment of £200. Those over 80, born on or before September 21, 1944, will benefit from the increased payment of £300.

Most eligible pensioners will receive a notification detailing the amount they will receive and the bank account into which it will be deposited, usually the same account used for their Pension Credit or other benefits. Age UK has indicated that these payments are automatic, meaning no action is required from the pensioners themselves.
