The Montenegro Women’s Volleyball Team will compete in a challenging group at the upcoming European Championship scheduled for August 21 to September 6, 2024, in Gothenburg, Sweden. They will face host nation Sweden, alongside reigning Olympic and world champions Italy, as well as France, Slovakia, and Croatia. This will mark Montenegro’s debut at the prestigious tournament, making their participation particularly significant.

Head coach Jovo Caković acknowledged the difficulty of the group, stating, “We found ourselves in a tough group, but the others are filled with quality teams, and there are definitely no easy matches at this championship.” He emphasized the importance of the team’s preparation and their experience from competing in the Golden League, which has allowed them to become familiar with several opponents, including Slovakia and Sweden.

Caković is keen on ensuring that the players arrive healthy and in top form. He remarked, “The most important thing is for the girls to be in good shape, to perform well for their clubs, and to come together as a strong squad.” This preparation will be crucial as the team gears up for their historic appearance.

For Nikoleta Perović, the team captain and most experienced member of the squad, participating in the European Championship represents a pinnacle in her career. She stated, “The group is indeed demanding – Italy is the world champion, France is a very strong team, and Sweden features Isabelle Haak, one of the best outside hitters in the world. However, each match presents an opportunity for us to demonstrate our character and team spirit.”

Perović conveyed confidence in her team’s abilities while acknowledging the challenges ahead. “We are aware of the obstacles, but we also recognize our strengths. We will do everything we can to represent Montenegro in the best possible way,” she added.

The 2024 European Championship will be the fourth edition featuring 24 teams and the 34th overall in the tournament’s history. In addition to Gothenburg, matches will also take place in Istanbul, Brno, and Baku, with Turkey set to defend their championship title.

As Montenegro prepares for this significant event, the anticipation builds for how this debuting team will perform on such a grand stage. The upcoming matches will not only test their skills but also showcase their determination and the spirit of Montenegro on the international volleyball scene.
