Bee Gees Dismiss Longtime Musicians Over Phone Amid Band Changes

The Bee Gees, the legendary pop group that dominated the charts in the 1970s, made headlines recently with revelations about the dismissal of longtime collaborators over the phone. The Gibb brothers, comprising Barry, Robin, and Maurice, reportedly ended their professional relationship with drummer Dennis Bryon and keyboardist Blue Weaver, along with guitarist Alan Kendall, in a move that surprised many in the music industry.

During their prime, the Bee Gees produced a string of hits such as “Night Fever” and “Stayin’ Alive.” While the brothers were renowned for their songwriting abilities, they relied heavily on the expertise of Bryon and Weaver to bring their music to life. Both musicians, hailing from Cardiff in South Wales, played pivotal roles in shaping the band’s sound during the late 1970s.

Musical Contributions of Bryon and Weaver

The duo of Bryon and Weaver turned the Gibb brothers’ demos into chart-topping hits. Bryon’s intricate drumming patterns are integral to classics like “Stayin’ Alive,” while Weaver’s atmospheric keyboard work opened the door to a new sound for the Bee Gees. As Barry Gibb noted in 1977, they were “more like Bee Gees than side musicians.”

Reflecting on their contributions, former Amen Corner saxophonist Allan Jones described Bryon and Weaver as “two really unassuming guys” who prioritized their craft over flamboyance. Jones emphasized their ability to meet the high standards set by the Gibb brothers, which were essential in creating the unmistakable sound of the Bee Gees.

In the early 1970s, the Bee Gees faced dwindling commercial success. After a period of struggle, the group underwent a remarkable transformation. Barry discovered his falsetto voice and began writing new material, leading to a resurgence that propelled the band back into the spotlight.

Turning Point and Subsequent Dismissal

The collaboration with Bryon and Weaver marked the beginning of a five-year period where the Bee Gees enjoyed unprecedented success, selling more records than any other band since the Beatles. However, as the disco craze began to wane by 1980, the Gibb brothers opted for a change, resulting in the dismissal of Bryon and Weaver via phone call.

This abrupt decision left the musicians feeling blindsided, with Weaver even considering legal action against the band. Acknowledging the misstep, Barry Gibb later attempted to make amends by offering financial compensation from the group’s future earnings. According to biographer Bob Stanley, the situation was eventually resolved, although Bryon and Weaver never worked with the Bee Gees again.

Despite the abrupt end to their collaboration, both Bryon and Weaver continued to thrive in the music industry. Bryon relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he passed away in November 2024 at the age of 75. Meanwhile, Weaver remains active, currently residing in Germany and touring with “Massachusetts: The Bee Gees Musical,” a show that celebrates the band’s legacy.

Reflecting on their time with the Bee Gees, Allan Jones notes the significance of their contributions. “What they achieved was pretty phenomenal,” he said. “To think they were a part of some of the biggest selling albums ever is mind-blowing.”
