Cullen in gear for vintage day

Cullen in gear for vintage day

The hum of the threshing machine is awaited for the annual Cullen and District Special Needs Association Vintage Day this Sunday on the grounds of Cullen GAA Ground commencing at 1pm.

For the 20th hosting, all kinds of vintage tractors, cars and engines are promised for a fun day geared for all the family in an idyllic setting that’s become a fixed event in the North Cork and Sliabh Luachra calendar.

Preparations have been in place for many months, machines are being oiled, belts repaired and the oat sheaves harvested last autumn by Pat O’Keeffe are awaiting the thresher, which will be the centre piece attraction of the day, evoking memories of by gone days.

Secretary Moira O’Keeffe states the staging offers the younger generation an opportunity of seeing how their forebearers had to work to seek out a living.

“Vintage Day provides something for the young and old, especially for enthusiasts to meet, discus, compare and admire the huge array of shining cars, tractors and stationary machines. These machines are beautifully restored and maintained”, she said. Proceeds support those with special needs, Moira applauding the support of so many great friends over the years.

“The downturn in the economy had a substantial impact on organisations and centres. They would not be in a position to deliver the range of quality services without the goodwill and generosity of local communities thus support for fundraising activities are a valuable and vital source of income, in enabling people with intellectual and physical disabilities live fulfilling lives and reach their full potential”, she said.

“An event like this does not happen without support and help from the community, the committee would like to thank and pay tribute to the many people who have given generously of their time, their talents and their resources over the years to help us in our fund-raising efforts. Once again, we call on volunteers to get involved, for whatever amount of time that they can help with tasks to make this the best ever afternoon”, said Moira.

The Duhallow Vintage Club are hosting a Vintage Car and Tractor Run, departing Newmarket from 10am to12 noon and bound for Cullen.

Side shows attractions include childrens sports, Giant Football Darts, Face Painting, Lucky dip, guess No. of logs, Butter making exhibition, Raffles including raffle for tickets for Nathan Carter & Daniel O’Donnell Shows plus many other valuable prizes while refreshments will be served on the day.
